Why I stopped chasing photorealistic digital art after a harsh crit
A senior artist in a Discord critique told me my work had no soul, just technique. They pointed out my color palette was too safe, so now I force myself to use complementary colors on purpose. Has anyone else had advice that made your work worse before it got better?

Why are you taking one person's opinion as gospel? That senior artist could have just been having a bad day or projecting their own hangups onto you. If your original colors actually worked for what you were making, forcing complementary colors just for the sake of it is gonna look forced.

Right... but sometimes that "bad day" comment cuts deeper when it's from someone with actual seniority though. Had a lead once tell me my palette was "too muddy" - turned out he was just salty about getting passed over for a promotion. Still burned that critique into my head for months, kept second-guessing every color choice after that.
