Stopped trying to do clean line art in one pass, started sketching at 20% opacity instead and my digital stuff finally looks right
I kept getting these stiff, wobbly outlines on my character drawings and thought I just needed more practice with my pen. Last month I watched a timelapse where the artist did like 40 messy strokes on a separate layer at low opacity, then traced the good shapes on top with a clean brush. Tried it on a piece for a friend's birthday and the difference was night and day, the lines came out way looser and more natural. Now I burn through 3 or 4 rough layers before inking and it takes longer but the result actually looks like something. Does anyone else keep their sketch layers visible underneath or do you hide them once you're done?

40 strokes on one layer sounds insane but that actually makes sense.
