Spent 4 hours trying to fix a layer shift in my digital painting
I thought it was a brush setting or tablet driver issue, but it turned out my canvas resolution was too high and my laptop just couldn't handle it. Dropped it from 6000 to 3000 pixels and it smoothed out instantly. Has anyone else run into performance problems with oversized canvases?

Build on that dust observation - I found out the hard way that even a clean laptop can choke if you're running a canvas that big while also having like 15 Chrome tabs open in the background. Dropping my canvas to 3000 pixels helped, but the real fix was closing everything else while painting and switching my laptop to high performance power mode. Your mileage may vary but those extra steps made a bigger difference than just resizing for me.

Oh I can totally relate but here is something nobody talks about - sometimes it is NOT just about resolution or hardware. I had this exact same struggle for WEEKS and it turned out my laptop was thermal throttling from dust buildup inside the fan. The high res canvas pushed the GPU to 100% which made it overheat, then the whole system slowed down and caused those shifts. Cleaned out the dust with compressed air and suddenly my 6000 pixel paintings ran smooth again. Might be worth checking your temps next time you see a shift.

Whoa that dust thing is wild! I guess I never thought about it either @anthonykim, but I bet a lot of people are running their machines dirty without realizing it. Sometimes the fix is just basic maintenance instead of buying new gear.
