Serious question about gallery lighting in that new Austin show

I swung by the new digital art space off 6th Street last Tuesday and half the screens were washed out by direct track lights, while the other half sat in near darkness. The curator told me they wanted a 'natural feel' but I couldn't see half the pixel work unless I stood at a weird angle. Is bright even lighting better for digital pieces, or does dim ambiance actually make the glow pop more for you?
