My latest character art mess changed my view on layer counts

Many artists online say using tons of layers makes digital painting better. I tried this for a fan art piece and ended up with a confusing, hard to edit file. My colors got muddy and I lost track of which layer did what. Going back to fewer layers helped me keep my art clean and easy to fix. Now I think focusing on a simple layer structure is key for good results. My bad experience taught me that more layers don't always mean better art.

Yeah saw a video where a pro artist said they only use like five layers total. Always stuck with me cause they kept winning awards with that simple method. Your mess with the fan art totally proves that point, more layers just means more chances to screw up the colors. Honestly my stuff looks cleaner too when I stop overthinking the layer stack. That "more layers equals better art" thing is mostly marketing for software companies anyway.

From what I remember, there was a big thread on an art forum where pro illustrators swore by keeping layers under ten. One person said they do all their line art and flat colors on just three layers, which makes them plan better from the start. In my experience, when I copy that method, my work looks more put together because I'm not always adjusting opacity and masks. It's easy to get lost adding layers for every detail, but that often messes up the overall balance. Sticking to a few layers really does help keep colors clean and the art process straightforward.
