My instructor told me to ditch the airbrush for my next digital portrait and go back to basic brush strokes...

I spent 3 days fighting with the settings on my Wacom tablet before I finally gave in and tried her way, and the skin tones came out way softer than anything I ever did with the airbrush tool, has anyone else had an art teacher give you advice that seemed backwards but actually worked?

maybe it's just me but i feel like a lot of teachers push the basic brush thing because they want you to actually learn how to build form with edges instead of relying on the airbrush to just blend everything into mush. like, the airbrush can be a crutch if you don't know why you're using it. what kind of portrait were you working on, something with a lot of soft transitions or more of a stylized thing?

@hall.quinn You ever try blocking in with just a hard round brush?
