I thought digital art NFTs were just a dumb trend until I saw one help a friend

My buddy in Austin made a simple pixel art monster last year and minted 50 copies as an NFT. I laughed and said it was a waste of time and the $70 in gas fees. He sold out in two days and made over $2,000, which he used to buy a new drawing tablet. It wasn't about the crazy money stories, it was seeing a real artist get paid directly for his work. That changed my whole view on how digital art can find an audience. Has anyone else had their mind changed by a specific project or sale?

Honestly, the thing that gets me is the proof of ownership part, which sounds boring but matters. My sister is a digital animator, and her stuff gets ripped and reposted everywhere with no credit. She put a few pieces as NFTs, not to get rich, but because that blockchain record is like a permanent signature she can point to. It's less about the sale and more about having a tool to say "I made this, and here's the date I made it." That's a real use that helps artists in a messed up system.

Remember when we all agreed it was just expensive links to monkey pictures? My cousin made an NFT of a blurry photo of his foot because he was bored. Some guy paid him eighty bucks for it. Now I have to pretend that's a valid art market while my cousin brags about his "collector." The whole thing feels like a prank that got way out of hand.

Oh wow, your cousin's foot NFT story is exactly the kind of thing that makes this whole space look ridiculous. I totally get why you'd feel like you're in some weird prank that just won't end. It's like the whole market got flooded with jokes and scams, and now serious artists have to fight for airtime next to blurry foot pics. I'm sorry you're stuck pretending that's a real market while your cousin walks around like some big shot collector. The whole thing has gotten so messy it's hard to take any of it seriously anymore.
