Appreciation post: That artist who told me my shading was flat
I posted a character piece in a digital art group last Tuesday and someone commented saying my shading looked flat. At first I was annoyed, but they showed me how to use a soft brush for edge light instead of hard lines. Tried it on a new piece and the depth came out way better than before. Has anyone else had a random critique that actually improved your whole style?

Oh man, that exact thing happened to me with lighting. Some dude in a critique thread told me my shadows were all the same darkness, like I was using one grey for everything. I was ready to be mad but he was right. Started mixing in warmer tones for shadows near the light source and cooler ones for the deep stuff. Total game changer, made my stuff look way less muddy. Funny how the critiques that sting the most usually have a point buried in them.

Whoa, I hear you but I actually think that advice can be kinda overrated tbh. I've seen some amazing artists who use all warm shadows and it gives their work this cool, unified glow that feels way more intentional. I guess it really depends on the mood you're going for, right?
