Spent 10 years using my torque wrench wrong before a random YouTube comment tipped me off

Buddy of mine spent years using a torque wrench like a regular ratchet, just cranking down till it felt tight. He even had a set of sockets he'd gouged up from hammering on them to break bolts loose. A shop talk video popped up on his feed one night where a guy mentioned you're supposed to use a smooth pulling motion, not a jerky one, and to stop at the click. His mind was blown. You figure he was actually getting the right torque that whole time or just lucky nothing fell apart?

I mean, using a torque wrench "wrong" for 10 years is a pretty strong claim. If your bolts weren't snapping or coming loose, maybe you were doing just fine with your own method. People act like there's only one way to get the job done, but if it worked for a decade, maybe your way wasn't that wrong after all.
