Old timer pulled me aside 10 years ago over an injector issue

I was fresh out of school working at a shop outside of Nashville, and I kept swapping injectors on a 7.3 Powerstroke that wouldn't stop missing. This old guy named Hank who had been turning wrenches since the 70s just watched me for 20 minutes. He finally walked over, pointed at the wiring harness, and said 'stop chasing parts, start chasing the wire.' I thought he was nuts because the harness looked fine to the naked eye. But I dug in with a multimeter and found a broken pin inside the connector that I would have never caught otherwise. That one sentence from him saved me weeks of frustration over my whole career. Has anyone else had an older mechanic give them advice that totally changed how you approach a problem?

Stop chasing parts, start chasing the wire" is probably the best advice anyone can give you. I learned that lesson the hard way too, throwing parts at a no-start for three days before finding a corroded ground that looked fine until I cleaned it. Now I always check connections and power first, it saves so much time and money.

You ever spend two days swapping sensors just to find out it was a loose battery terminal?
