Had a starter motor blow up on a 6.7 Cummins in a truck stop lot in Ohio

It threw the bendix right through the housing and sprayed metal everywhere, has anyone else seen a starter grenade like that on a highway job?

...and I was just reading about that same thing on another forum, some guy said his starter went out on a 6.7 going down I-75 in Georgia and it actually threw the bendix through his oil pan. Heard a loud bang, saw oil spraying everywhere, thought he threw a rod at first. Its wild how common that failure mode is on those trucks, especially once they get up around 200k miles. I guess the bendix gets worn out and then just lets go like a bullet when you hit the key.

Buddy of mine had a starter let go on his 6.7 in a parking lot outside Nashville. It sounded like someone fired a shotgun under the hood. He said the bendix came clean off and punched a hole right through the starter housing. Sprayed shrapnel all over his fan and radiator. He was stuck there for two days waiting on parts. I’d say your story is more common than people want to admit, especially on those older high-mileage trucks.
