Warning: I ran my old iPod Classic off a wall charger for 2 years before I learned that was killing the battery
For anyone still keeping a 5th gen iPod Classic alive like me, I finally figured something out last weekend and I feel kind of dumb about it. I had been plugging it into the Apple 5W wall block every night on my nightstand, thinking I was doing the right thing, keeping it topped off. After about 2 years of that, the battery was lasting maybe 40 minutes unplugged. I opened it up to swap in a $14 replacement cell from a parts site and saw the little battery was puffed up like a pillow. Started reading old forum threads from like 2009 and apparently these things want to charge off a computer USB port or a lower amp brick, not a fast wall block. Something about the charging circuit getting cooked over time. New battery in, and now I only charge it off my laptop when I sync it, and it has been holding a solid 8 hours for 3 weeks now. Not sure if this is true for the newer Nanos or the Shuffles. Has anyone else had a brick fry an old player on them, or was it just my unit being weird?
