Old iPod video died mid-flash mod, restore or keep it original?

Spent 3 weekends replacing the hard drive on a 5th gen and the click wheel stopped responding right after, so I'm torn between ordering a $15 parts board or just leaving it as a brick... anyone else break theirs worse trying to keep old tech alive, or do you stop at the first failure?
