My old iPod classic finally gave up at 32 GB, now I'm trying to resurrect it with a CF card

It died mid-sync last Tuesday after 11 years of daily use, so I cracked it open and popped in a 128 GB compact flash adapter, but the firmware keeps freezing on the Apple logo, has anyone else gotten one of these to boot again with an aftermarket drive?
