Was watching a YouTube deep dive on the mall in my hometown and found out it closed because the owner got caught in a money laundering scheme

Huh, wait, that's wild. I can't believe the whole mall shut down just because of that. Money laundering in a shopping center sounds like something out of a movie, not real life. Did they have some sketchy storefronts or was it the owner himself doing it behind the scenes? Must have been a huge operation to take down the whole place. How did nobody notice anything weird was going on there for so long?

The owner was running it through fake jewelry stores and empty kiosks. They'd report sales that never happened. Regular shoppers didn't notice because the stores looked legit from the outside. Took the feds years to connect all the fake transactions.
