The security guard at the empty Sears in Marion let me sit on a bench for 20 minutes and his one line stuck with me
Last month I drove out to the dying mall in Marion, Indiana and got to the Sears anchor before anyone noticed me, so the guard walked over and instead of kicking me out he just sat down on the bench next to mine. He pointed at the tiled floor in the entry, still shiny under a layer of dust, and mentioned he had waxed it himself for 11 years before the store closed in 2019. He looked at the empty escalator and said the weird part was not the mall dying but how the building still waits on people who are never coming back. It got me thinking about how these places close, not all at once from one big thing, but from a hundred small loops that just stop. Has anyone else talked to a guard or maintenance guy at one of these dead spots and gotten a story like that?
