The LED bulb trick I used for mall photos was ruining my shots for 2 years

A security guard at the old Franklin Mills in Philly pointed out my flash was bouncing off the skylight glass and washing everything out, so I switched to a handheld warm light and suddenly the food court tiles looked like they did in 1995, has anyone else had a similar moment where you realized your whole method was backwards?
