The food court fountain was the real reason people stayed, not the stores
Visited the shuttered Crossroads Mall in Phoenix last month while doing some urban exploring, and they had drained the old fountain that I remember tossing pennies into as a kid. Standing there in the silent tile pit, I realized the stores were just an excuse, that water feature was the whole social meeting point that e-commerce can't replace. Has anyone else found the broken communal spots hit harder than the empty anchor stores?
