Snuck into the old Chesterfield Mall in St. Louis on a Tuesday and found a working payphone
The mall closed in 2019 but the payphone by the old Sears entrance still had a dial tone, which felt way weirder than any of the collapsed ceiling tiles. I picked up the receiver and heard a busy signal, and it hit me that some phone line somewhere is still being paid for every month, 6 years after the mall died. Anyone else find stuff in dead malls that's still technically running?
That busy signal detail is wild. Back in 2021 I walked through the old Rolling Acres in Akron and the escalators were still humming along like nothing happened, just going up and down for nobody. Even stranger, the fire alarm panel in the food court was still lit up green, so someone's monitoring company was getting a signal from a building with trees growing through the roof. There was also a drinking fountain near the JCPenney that still ran cold water, which honestly freaked me out more than the dark stores. Something about the small stuff still working makes the whole place feel haunted in a way broken stuff never does.
