Saw a dead mall that was WAY safer than another one I explored last month

I checked out the Granite Run Mall outside Philly last weekend and it was nothing like the broken-down mess I saw at Century III two years ago. At Granite Run the ceiling tiles are still intact and the floor isn't covered in moldy water, but Century III had collapsed ceilings and rust everywhere from roof leaks. Has anyone else noticed how some malls fall apart WAY faster than others based on the roof condition?

Huh, have you checked out the roof situation at Granite Run yet? I poked around a similar mall in Ohio a few years back, and the roof was the whole difference between a mostly okay building and a total wreck. In my experience, if the roof is shot and water gets in, the drywall and ceiling tiles just crumble fast, and mold takes over everything from the floor up. Century III probably had a bad roof leak that just got ignored, while Granite Run's roof seems like it was maybe patched up in time. Your mileage may vary, but from what I've seen, the roof condition really sets the pace for how fast a dead mall falls apart.

Actually, Century III had a different issue. I remember reading that a major part of that mall's roof collapsed in 2012, and they just fenced it off rather than fixing it. That let water in for years, turning the whole place into a mold factory real quick. Granite Run's roof is probably holding up better because they caught the small leaks early, not because they patched it perfectly.
