PSA: Don't listen to the urban explorer who said the roof was safe at the old Granite Run Mall

Some guy on a forum named "RooftopRick" swore the skylight panels at Granite Run in PA were reinforced. Said he walked all over them. I trusted him and stepped on one near the old food court. It cracked like an egg and I went through up to my armpit. Bruised my ribs bad and broke my phone. That guy is either lying or got lucky. Has anyone else found that old explorer tips are way off?

Actually I gotta disagree with you there Paul. I've been up on plenty of old rooftops and those bubble skylights are way more hit or miss than people admit. Some of them are built like tanks with wire mesh inside and can handle a person easily, others are just cheap acrylic that crumbles if you look at them wrong. The real issue is nobody labels which is which and people like RooftopRick probably tested one spot and assumed the whole roof was the same. I've seen posts where guys claim a certain floor is totally solid and then three photos later you can see rot in the corners. You gotta learn to read the building yourself instead of trusting anyone's word.

The old food court? That's wild. Those skylight panels in the Granite Run food court were the old bubble style from the 80s, definitely not meant for any weight. RooftopRick must have been walking on the metal frames between them or something, because the plastic itself gets brittle as hell after a few decades in the sun. Glad you didn't fall all the way through.
