Overheard a security guard at Northpark Mall talking about the mannequins
I was poking around Northpark Mall in Joplin last year and this old security guard named Dave pointed at a mannequin in the window. He said "that one's been standing there since 2012, same pose, same dress, just gathering dust." It hit me that these places aren't just empty buildings, they're stuck in time with all these weird reminders of what used to happen. Has anyone else found weird stuff like that at a dead mall?

Yeah, "gathering dust" really hits hard. I used to think dead malls were just sad, but that makes them feel almost like museums of a weird forgotten time.

The "museums of a weird forgotten time" idea is pretty spot on. You kind of wonder though, what exactly are they preserving? Is it the architecture, the specific brands that died with them, or something more like the feeling of what Saturday shopping used to be like?
