I paid $18 for a mall directory map from a dead Sears in Grand Rapids and it was the best money I ever burned
Bought it off a guy on eBay who pulled it out of a Sears in Grand Rapids before the building got torn down in 2019. The map shows the whole floor plan with store names and suite numbers, which is how I figured out the food court used to be a JCPenney. Kind of a crutch though, because now I skip the fun part of walking around guessing what each empty space used to be. For folks who map old malls, do you buy old directories and floor plans or just wing it with your eyes?
The part about it being "kind of a crutch" is what got me, because I used to be all in on just winging it with my eyes. I figured buying old directories was cheating somehow, like you weren't really doing the detective work yourself. Then I found a floor plan for a dead mall near me and suddenly I could see how the whole place fit together, not just the random bits I could guess walking around. Honestly it changed my mind, because the map didn't kill the fun, it made me notice stuff I'd walked right past a dozen times. Now I bring one along and still guess first, then check myself after.
