Dropped $275 on a "guided ghost mall tour" in Ohio and got a 40 min walk past a locked food court
So back in March I paid $275 for what this guy called an "exclusive after hours exploration" of the Rolling Acres Mall in Akron. His site had blurry pics and said things like "unfiltered access" and "real history" so I bit. What I got was a guy named Dave walking 14 of us past a chained up food court, then standing there talking about his divorce for 20 minutes. We never went inside a single store. The whole thing ran 40 minutes and he ended it early saying his knee hurt. Turns out he does this every weekend and one of the other folks there said the same thing happened to her in January. I get that these places are dangerous and honestly I don't even blame the guy for not going in, but then don't sell it like you're gonna. If you see a paid "tour" for any dead mall, just save your cash and go read the county records on why it closed, that part is free. Has anyone found a legit way to get inside these spots or is it all just luck and trespassing tickets?
Rolling Acres actually closed in 2009 and they tore most of it down back in 2016, so whatever you walked past in March wasn't the mall proper, it was more the leftover strip along Romig Road. Dave probably just marched you around the outside of a demolition site and called it a tour, which explains why you never got inside a store. If you want real access to dead malls, the trick most people use is the county land bank or the owner's rep, since a lot of these places let urban explorers in if you sign a waiver and go with a legit group. But yeah, paying a random guy with blurry pics is just lighting money on fire. Next time pull the property records first, you'll save the 275 and the knee story.
