Warning: almost lost 2 years of family photos because my old hard drive only spins up sometimes
Last Tuesday I went to grab a folder of photos off my 2005 external drive that I keep in a drawer, and it made a clicking sound then just quit. I tried it 4 more times over the next hour, and it only showed up on my desktop once, long enough to copy 6 files before it vanished again. A guy at the repair shop on Burnet Road in Austin said the heads were on their way out and quoted me $1,200 for a clean room recovery, which is way more than the drive cost new. If you still have a decade old drive holding anything you care about, plug it in this week and move the files off, do not wait for it to die. Has anyone had luck with a drive that clicks and disappears like this, or is that pretty much the end?

Man, I gotta push back a little here. A 2005 drive that's clicking and dropping off your desktop is not a "this week" warning, that thing has been dying for years and you just got lucky this time. Makes me wonder how many people are gonna read this and panic when their drive is honestly fine, most old drives just sit there working forever if you keep them cool and dry. I mean yeah, back up your stuff, that's just smart, but calling it a warning like the drive is out to get you feels like a stretch, its a machine and machines wear out. Also $1,200 is nuts for family photos unless you got like wedding video on there, idk maybe its just me but I'd try the freezer trick or a cheap USB adapter before paying that.
