Spent 5 hours last Saturday getting a Zip disk to read on a Pentium 3 rig in my garage
I pulled an old Iomega Zip drive out of a box because I wanted to grab some writing from a disk labeled 1999. The drive kept making this clicking noise, so I cleaned the heads with a q tip and rubbing alcohol, tried three different USB adapters, and swapped the power supply twice. Turns out the disk itself had a bad spot near the start, and the drive only read it after I copied everything to a Compaq Deskpro running Windows 98. Has anyone else had a Zip disk that only worked in one specific machine?
Fought that same battle with a 100MB Zip disk from my college years that only wanted to spin up in my old Gateway. My drive would click and grind on my newer build no matter what I tried, but the second I hooked it to the beige box in the basement it read like nothing was wrong. Something about those old drives and the way they talk to certain motherboards, right?
