The $8 library card beat my $200 research app for this project
I was digging into local history for a family reunion speech and blew $200 on a genealogy app that gave me nothing but census repeats. Then my cousin in Nashville suggested the public library's microfilm room, and three old newspaper clippings there cracked the whole story open. Has anyone else had a free or cheap source totally outshine the paid tool they trusted first?
The library's microfilm room beating the app isn't a fluke, it's just how local history works. Census data is the same everywhere, but old newspapers have the weird details, like names misspelled or the exact street address of a family business. The paid apps mostly pull from the same few databases, so you're paying for convenience, not new info. Also, the librarians usually know the specific collections in their own town, which no app can match.
