My dad's "measure twice, cut once" line failed me on a $200 shelf build in my garage

My dad always said "measure twice, cut once" and I repeated it to my kids like gospel, but last month I built a floating shelf in my garage in Reno and measured three times and still cut the boards 2 inches short. The tape measure hook was loose and I never checked it, so every measurement was off by the same amount. My dad's rule assumes the tool works, and that's the part nobody says out loud. Now I test my tape against a ruler before every job, which feels stupid but saves wood. Anyone else got a rule that sounds wise until you find the hole in it?
