Mom read one line from Charlotte's Web at dinner and I ended up rereading the whole thing at 34
My mom was over for dinner two weeks ago and she saw my old copy of Charlotte's Web on the shelf. She opened it to the part where Charlotte dies and read it out loud at the table, just that one paragraph, and I had to leave the room. Here is the thing. I read that book maybe six times as a kid and I always thought it was a story about a spider saving a pig. Reading it at 34, sitting in my own kitchen, that one line about nobody being forgotten hit me completely different. It is not about the pig at all, it is about what you leave behind when you are gone, and I sat up until 1 AM finishing it again. I learned that a quote you loved at 10 can mean the total opposite thing to you at 34, and that is not a flaw, it is the whole point of going back. So my question for this group is this. What quote did you read young and then come back to as an adult and realize you had it totally wrong? I want the ones that flipped on you, not the ones that just stayed nice.
