Hot take: my daughter taped a quote from Charlotte's Web to the fridge, and it got me through a rough Tuesday
Last Tuesday was one of those days where nothing huge went wrong but everything small did. I burned my toast, my car wouldn't start until the third try, and I sat in a Walgreens parking lot on Route 9 for 40 minutes waiting on a tow that never showed. My daughter is 11 and she had been doing a book project on Charlotte's Web for school. She wrote out the line "It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer" on an index card and stuck it on the fridge with a magnet shaped like a strawberry. I saw it when I finally got home around 7. Here is the thing. I read that book in 4th grade and remembered it as a story about a pig and a spider. I never once thought about what that line was really saying until I read it on my own fridge after a bad day. It is about Charlotte, sure, but it hit me as being about my kid noticing something worth putting on the fridge in the first place. I stood there with my coat still on for a good minute. Has anyone else had a quote from a kids book land harder as an adult than it ever did when you were young? Which one was it?
