Got laughed at for using a bookmark in 'The Name of the Wind'
I was sitting in a coffee shop in Nashville last Tuesday, about 50 pages into Rothfuss's book, and I pulled out a little sticky note to mark my spot. A guy at the next table snorted and said, 'You don't need that, just remember the page number.' I told him I have the memory of a goldfish and he just shook his head. Has anyone else gotten weird looks for being basic with your reading gear?

I mean, that guy sounds like he's way too invested in how other people read. It's just a bookmark, not like you pulled out a highlighter and started annotating in the margins. People get weirdly gatekeepy about the dumbest stuff sometimes. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather look dumb with a sticky note than lose my place and have to skim back through 50 pages. Plus, that book is long enough without making it harder on yourself.

Yeah it's wild how people fixate on the little things like that. Makes me think of how everyone's got their own system for everything these days, from how they fold laundry to how they load the dishwasher. We all think our way is the right way and anything else looks wrong. But honestly, as long as the book gets read and the dishes get clean, who cares how you got there. Sticky notes are fine, dog ears are fine, whatever works for you without hurting anyone else.
