Spent 11 hours chasing a ghost login on my home server, finally found the cause

Last Saturday I locked myself out of my own NAS after a failed 2FA update. Tried every recovery method I knew, even called my buddy in Denver who does this for a living. My mistake was using the same password for the recovery email and the admin account, a classic I should've caught way sooner. Has anyone else wasted an entire day on something this dumb, or am I the only one who forgets the basics under pressure?
