PSA: My laptop got snatched at a coffee shop in Austin and I learned the hard way

I was working at a cafe on 6th Street last month and turned my head for maybe 30 seconds to order another drink. Someone just walked by and grabbed my computer right off the table. I hadn't enabled full disk encryption, so all my client info and passwords were basically an open book. Do you think physical security like cable locks is overkill, or is it a basic necessity now?

Yeah Lily is right on about the cable lock being cheap insurance. I actually keep one on my bag at all times now even when I'm just going to grab a coffee. The thing is a thief usually has like 2 seconds to swipe something and walk away. If they see a cable, they move on to the next table. I also make a habit of using the bathroom or ordering with my laptop bag zipped shut and looped around my leg. And seriously turn on that disk encryption right now. It's not hard to do and it keeps your data safe even if someone manages to grab your machine.

Yeah, cable locks are cheap insurance. I started using one after my friend's tablet got swiped at the library. It's not foolproof, but it makes you a harder target. Most thieves just want a quick grab. Also, turn on that disk encryption right now, it's in your system settings. Takes five minutes and saves you a world of hurt.

Your friend's tablet got stolen at the library? That's a public place, seems bold.
