Pro tip: my spam folder hit 4,000 unread and one email almost got me
I checked my spam folder for the first time in about 8 months and it said 4,112 unread messages, which shocked me because I thought maybe 20 a month came in. Most were junk, but around number 3,800 I found one pretending to be my power company saying my service would be shut off in 24 hours unless I paid $147 by phone. The weird part is it used my real account number, so they got it from one of those breaches, and I almost called the number before I noticed the email address was off by one letter. Now I set a reminder to skim the spam folder every couple weeks, and I also turned on two factor for my utility login, which I should have done years ago. If you get one of these, call the number on your actual bill instead of the one in the email. Has anyone else seen fake utility shutoff emails that get your account number right?
