My home router got hit by a weird attack last Tuesday night

Around 11 PM, my internet in Phoenix just died. I checked the router logs and saw thousands of connection attempts from IPs I didn't know. It was a brute force attack trying to get into the admin panel. I had left the default login info, which was a huge mistake. I had to factory reset everything and set a strong new password. Has anyone else had their home network targeted like this recently?

Yikes, that's scary. Honestly, I'd check if any of your smart home gadgets got compromised during that window, they're often the real target.

Smart home stuff is basically a back door into your whole network. Those little gadgets have terrible security most of the time. Changing passwords is a good start, but you really need to check for weird activity on each device's app. It's a huge pain, but way less of a pain than getting your bank info stolen.

After my router got hit last year, I went through and changed every single password for my lights, thermostat, and even the smart plug for my coffee maker. I found two devices that had weird login times from another country. It took a whole afternoon, but turning on two-factor auth for the app accounts was the real fix.
