Just realized my bank's two-factor texts are a security weak point

Visited a coffee shop in Austin last week and watched a stranger read someone's verification code over their shoulder. They typed it into their own phone in seconds. I always thought 2FA was bulletproof, but those SMS codes are just too exposed in public spaces. Am I overthinking this, or has anyone else found a better alternative like an authenticator app they actually stick with?
