PSA: My new $180 keyboard PCB just fried itself the first time I plugged it in.
Happened two nights ago. Was doing a hotswap build with some silent switches. Heard a pop, smelled that awful burnt electronics smell. Board is totally dead. Tried a different cable, different port, nothing. Feels like I just lit that money on fire. Anyone know a good place to get a board fixed, or is it just a paperweight now?

That's the worst feeling when a pricey appliance just quits. My sister's fancy blender gave up after a year, and the warranty was a joke. They wanted her to pay shipping to fix their own mistake. Makes you wonder what you're really paying for with some of these brands.

60 bucks for a multimeter could have told you if the board had a short before you plugged it in. Ive built about a dozen boards now and I always test for continuity between the usb port and ground before giving it power. That pop you heard was almost certainly a blown capacitor or voltage regulator, and those dont just fail from plugging it in once unless something was already wrong. Most hotswap boards have a diode or fuse that can be replaced if you know how to solder, but if the pcb itself is charred its done. Check with a magnifying glass near the usb port and the mcu for any visible burn marks.
