Lubed my switches wrong for 2 years, a $7 brush changed it

Back in 2021 I got into this hobby and watched a video about lubing switches, but I skipped the brush part and just used a tiny flathead screwdriver to smear the grease around. Last month I picked up a cheap $7 brush set from a local hobby shop in Denver and tried it on a fresh batch of Gat yellows, night and day difference in feel and sound. Turns out I was barely getting any lube on the rails, so the stems still had that scratchy drag the whole time. I felt like an idiot when I compared the two boards side by side, the one I relubed sounds way deeper and smoother. Anyone else started with a hack job tool and only figured it out after years of building?

Man, I feel this in my bones! I did the same thing with a toothpick for almost a year on my first set of Tangerines. I thought I was being clever and saving money, but really I was just pushing the grease into the corners and leaving the actual contact points dry. When I finally got a proper brush and did my Alpacas, the difference was so obvious I actually laughed out loud. The scratchiness I thought was just "how linears sound" disappeared completely. It's wild how such a small tool can change the whole hobby for you.
