A guy at the meetup in Austin said something about keycaps that stuck with me

He was showing off his build, and when I asked about the keycaps, he just said, 'I don't buy sets anymore, I just hunt for the one perfect key for each spot.' He had a board full of mismatched caps, each one he really liked. It happened last month, and I've been thinking about it ever since. Has anyone else tried building a board like that, one key at a time?

That's such a cool way to look at it! I used to be all about matching sets, but hearing about his method totally flipped a switch for me. Now I'm slowly picking out single caps that just feel right, like this awesome textured escape key I found. It makes the board feel way more personal.

I saw the same thing happen with my buddy's record collection last year. He used to only buy full albums but now he just hunts for the one perfect 45 single from each artist he likes. It's like we're all moving away from matching sets and towards stuff that actually means something. Coffee shops are doing it too with mismatched mugs instead of the boring uniform ones. Even my neighbor started planting random different flowers in her yard instead of rows of the same kind. Everything is getting more personal and less about looking perfect in a photo.
