Heard a 19-year-old say he makes $400 a month from a Discord server, and I can't tell if that's the future or a trap
Last week at a coffee shop in Portland I sat next to two guys talking about how one of them makes $400 a month from a Discord server with 900 paid members at $5 each. He said he spends about 30 hours a week moderating chats and posting updates, and he has no other job. One side of me thinks this is real income that didn't exist 10 years ago and any kid can start it with a laptop. The other side thinks he is basically working a part time job for less than minimum wage once you do the math on hours. I keep going back and forth on whether paid communities are a real path or just a new way to be broke with extra steps. Where do you all land on this? Is a small paid Discord actually a business, or is it just a side thing that eats your time?
$400 a month for 30 hours a week is like $3 an hour, which is honestly below any job you could get anywhere. Calling that a business is a stretch when he's basically paying himself in pocket change for a part time gig. It's real money but it's not a real path, it's just a hobby that happens to pay for his coffee.
