Vent: The Hero's Journey template gets way too much hype in prompts
Every prompt on here seems to demand a character arc with a clear mentor and a big battle. I ran a workshop in Tulsa last month where 12 out of 15 submissions followed that exact beat sheet. Real life doesn't work in three neat acts. My best short piece this year was about a cashier who just changes her schedule to avoid a creepy regular, no grand conflict, no lesson learned. Why is subtle change treated like a failure in writing prompts? Has anyone else pushed back on this structure and gotten a better response from readers?
