Overheard a writing teacher say 'kill your darlings' and I'm still mad about it
She told a 16 year old to cut a whole scene about a grandmother's soup because it didn't 'advance the plot', but isn't the point of a prompt to explore character, not just move pieces around? Has anyone else had a workshop leader push efficiency over emotion in a way that just felt wrong?
