My old writing teacher was wrong about killing off characters

Back in 2009, my community college instructor told me readers love a tragic ending and that killing off the main character would make my story memorable. So I did it in a 20 page piece about a fishing trip on Lake Erie, and the whole workshop ripped it apart. Turns out they just felt cheated, not moved. Has anyone else followed advice from a teacher or mentor that totally backfired, or was I just unlucky with that class?
