My old writing prompts were just 'what if a guy had a dog'

I used to think up ideas by staring at a blank page, which mostly gave me stuff like 'a detective solves a crime.' Then, about six months ago, my cat knocked a jar of pennies off the shelf. The sound it made gave me a full story about a goblin bank heist. Now I just wander my apartment looking for random objects to spark something. Has anyone else's prompt method gotten weirder over time?

So what's the weirdest object that's given you a full story? I keep staring at my toaster now, waiting for a plot about sentient appliances, but all I get is burnt bagel smell.

Oh man, "burnt bagel smell" is a whole mood. My weird one was a single blue Lego brick I found in the parking lot. It gave me this sad little story about a kid dropping his favorite piece and the brick's journey through rain and car tires, trying to get back to him. Toasters are tough, they're kind of loud and angry already, so maybe it's just yelling its story and you gotta listen through the noise.

My stapler gave me a whole office thriller last week, so I feel you, @hannaht91.
