Is it better to outline everything first or just dive in and write?

Training wheels? That's insane, I built a whole career on outlines before I ever sold my first house.

I saw this one author on YouTube say that outlines are like training wheels, you use them until you get the hang of riding the bike then you toss them. For me, I tried diving in blind once and ended up with 30 pages of dead ends. A loose outline helps keep me from wandering off into the weeds but I don't stick to it like a map. The key is finding that middle ground where you have some direction but still leave room to goof around.
