I was wrong about flash fiction contests for years
Back in 2017 I thought those 100 word flash fiction contests were just a gimmick. I figured you couldn't tell a real story in so few words. Then a friend from my writers group dared me to enter one with a $15 entry fee. I ended up writing a piece about a diner waitress in Tulsa, Oklahoma that got an honorable mention. That little win really changed my mind about how much punch a short form can pack. Has anyone else had a writing challenge they dismissed at first but ended up learning from?

Haha, bet my $15 taught me a lesson about sounding like a pretentious jerk about writing. Glad it worked out for you, but I still side-eye any contest asking for cash.
