I bought a $35 prompt deck from Etsy and it's basically a list of words I could've written on napkins
I saw this wooden box of 52 creative writing prompts at a craft fair in Tulsa back in March and thought it would get me writing again. The cards say stuff like 'write about a door' and 'describe the color blue to someone blind' with no detail or twist, stuff a 6th grader could come up with in a minute. I wrote more in one free session using a random word generator than I did in two weeks with this deck. Save your money and check the library's free prompt jar or just pull a noun out of a hat. Has anyone found a cheap or free prompt source that actually pushes you past the first sentence?
I read a piece on LitHub a while back about those prompt decks and the writer basically said the same thing. The cards are made to look nice on a coffee table, not to make you write. The one tip that stuck was to use a boring prompt but add your own limit, like write about a door but the person can't touch it or it has to happen in 90 seconds. Constraints do more work than the prompt itself.
