Hit 50,000 words on my novel draft last night and it felt weirdly hollow

I've been working on this fantasy story for about 8 months now, just chipping away at it after my kid goes to bed. Last night I hit 50,000 words exactly and I thought I'd feel pumped or accomplished or something. Instead I just sat there staring at the screen thinking about how much of it is probably garbage that needs rewriting. The number felt big when I started, like a mountain I'd never climb. But now that I'm here it's more like I just passed a sign on a highway that says there's still 100 more miles to go. Has anyone else gotten to a milestone in their writing and just felt kinda meh about it instead of celebrating?

The 50k mark just means you're far enough in to see how much still needs fixing.

rileynguyen nailed it honestly. That moment of "oh crap this actually needs work" hits EVERYONE around that mark. Here's what helped me: print out a random 10 pages from the middle and read them on paper. You'll spot the garbage faster but also find stuff that actually works. The trick is remembering that 50,000 words of solid story beats 150,000 words of perfect prose that goes nowhere. Just keep moving forward with the draft.
