Used to eyeball my counterweight setup until a near tip in Tacoma last month, now I always do the math first.

That "near tip" feeling is the worst. My buddy loaded his pickup bed with gravel for a garden project, just guessed at the weight. Hit a dip on the freeway and the front end got so light he said the steering went numb for a second. Scared him straight. Now he weighs everything on a bathroom scale before it goes in.

Ever try the old wheel well trick? I just fill the bed until the rear tires look right, then stop. Works better than guessing.

My uncle hauled bricks for thirty years by feel and never once had a close call. Sometimes you just get a sense for the load after doing it enough times.
