Tried a luffing jib on that high rise job downtown, total waste of time compared to a tower crane.
Set up took forever and the swing was way too slow for the pace we needed. Has anyone else had better luck with one in tight spaces?

Man, I gotta push back on that one. In my experience a luffing jib is worth its weight in gold on those cramped downtown jobs where you're dodging existing buildings and tight street access. Yeah the setup takes longer but once it's up the ability to raise and lower the jib on the fly lets you work around obstacles without having to wait for the wind or swing radius to clear something.

About 3 years ago I was helping a buddy with a residential job in Seattle where we had maybe 4 feet of clearance on each side of the house. We spent a whole morning just getting the boom up because of power lines and a tree that couldn't come down. That's when it clicked for me - having that ability to tuck the jib in and out is basically the same as having an extendable ladder versus a fixed one. It's one of those things where you don't realize how much you need the flexibility until you're stuck without it. Totally reminds me of how people buy a couch that's 2 inches too wide for their doorway and then act surprised when it won't fit. Sometimes the extra effort upfront saves you a headache later, plain and simple.
